REP. STEVE KING INTRODUCES HEARTBEAT BILL

St. Louis, MO:  This morning, Rep. Steve King (IA-4) held a press conference announcing his newly sponsored "Heartbeat Bill."  Eagle Forum Education & Legal Defense Fund Executive Director Rebekah Gantner briefly spoke at the event.

"Phyllis Schlafly Eagles and the Eagle Forum Education & Legal Defense Fund whole-heartedly support this legislation," Gantner said.  "This law would protect untold thousands of babies each year whose beating hearts can be detected.  We urge Congress to pass this bill and the Trump Administration to sign it into law!"

Washington, D.C. - Faith2Action President Janet Porter will join Congressman Steve King and pro-life leaders today at a press conference for the Heartbeat Bill (HR 490), which was introduced and referred to the House Judiciary Committee on January 12th.  The press conference will take place on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. ET at the House Triangle on the East side of the Capitol.

"The federal Heartbeat Bill is a common sense incremental bill to protect every child whose beating heart can be detected by a doctor," said Janet Porter, President of Faith2Action and architect of the Heartbeat Bill. "The heartbeat is a universal indicator of life--it is time we recognize it across the board."

"Even the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals recognized that 'the point at which an unborn child possesses a detectable heartbeat' is a 'more consistent and certain marker than viability'-where the court currently allows legal protection," explained Porter. "The federal Heartbeat Bill will move the line of legal protection much closer to conception--where it belongs."

Congressman Steve King (R, Iowa) stated, "My legislation will require all physicians, before conducting an abortion, to detect the heartbeat of the unborn child. If a heartbeat is detected, the baby is protected. King added, "I believe our most important responsibility that God has bestowed upon us is to protect innocent human life, and I will continue to dedicate my life to that responsibility."

"It's time we stop discriminating against the youngest members of the human family--babies whose heartbeats can be heard," said Porter.  She added, "The inauguration of President Trump has given us an open door and I intend to run through it!"

The Heartbeat Bill was first introduced in Ohio in 2011. Versions of it have since been introduced in 17 states. It passed in Arkansas, North Dakota and Ohio but was vetoed by Ohio Governor John Kasich in December.
