Reasons to Oppose the Travel Ban

While liberals around the country were busy complaining about President Trump’s travel ban that sought to stop the onslaught of outrageous aggression, the liberals in California made their own travel ban against religious expression. According to a new California law, public universities are no longer allowed to send students to states that oppose gay rights. Students that have prepared for months to make presentations of their research have been told to cancel their plans. Athletes have been told not to expect any games with rivaling teams from states like Tennessee, Kansas, or North Carolina. The logic is that California doesn’t want taxpayer dollars going to states that hold conservative, pro-family principles.

Fifty Years of the Phyllis Schlafly Report: Johnson Amendment Recalls the "Determined Drive Against Churches"

The Founding Fathers recognized that the U.S. Constitution should not be easily amended. That is why they determined that amendments must pass both houses of Congress and be approved by three-fourths of the state legislatures, the most stringent majority requirement since the Articles of Confederation. This notion of a “living” constitution is a complete non sequitur to the actions taken by the Framers. Because of this great weight placed on the passage of constitutional amendments, there is an equally great weight placed behind the authority of amendments when they are passed. The authority of amendments is paramount to understanding the implications of what the Equal Rights Amendment would have done to the American system of government. Phyllis Schlafly understood this gravity better than most, which equipped her to write about the implications of ERA on religious freedom in the March 1975 Phyllis Schlafly Report.

Creeping Socialism?

During the Roosevelt and Truman Years, Republican Candidates used to hold forth on a subject called “Creeping Socialism.” This was defined as the growth of big government, taxes, debt, bureaucrats, and controls – all leading to the ultimate horror of Socialism like in England. I doubt that many votes were swayed by this oratory. The result sounded too remote and the semantics too extravagant.

Taxpayers Face Billions in Obamacare Judgements

In February the U.S. Court of Claims ordered the federal government to pay $214 million to a small Oregon insurer based on its participation in the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. Moda Health had enthusiastically participated in Obamacare health insurance exchanges only to nearly go out of business. They participated based on a promise by the Obama Administration that it would provide financial support under the “risk corridor program” to companies that lose money insuring unhealthy patients. Moda Health participated and lost money, but then the government refused to fully reimburse it.

A History of Public Prayer

Beginning this day – April 25 – in 1789, every session of the U.S. Senate has opened with prayer. This was a continuation of the Continental Congress’ practice during the Revolution, as Ben Franklin remarked in 1787: “In the beginning of the Contest with Great Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayer in this room for Divine protection.”

Studies show that nearly one-third of all the sodium ingested by Americans is from restaurant food. Surveys conducted in New York City and Philadelphia estimate that the salt content in fast food meals served in those cities increased by 23% between 1997 and 2010.

Truth in Black and White

Liberals are experts at taking very bad ideas and making them look very good. The issue of free speech on college campuses is an excellent example. After all, conservatives and liberals would generally agree that we do not like to see real hateful speech on college campuses. However, the liberal ideology uses that sentiment to muzzle free speech while the conservative realizes that curtailing First Amendment protections is not a real solution. The only true response to speech that we disagree with is to meet it with other speech of a differing viewpoint.

Fifty Years of the Phyllis Schlafly Report: Taking Education From "The Hands Of The Professionals"

Education is a critical part of Phyllis Schlafly’s legacy. Between stopping the Equal Rights Amendment, fighting for America First foreign policy, and securing military superiority, Phyllis always brought the dialogue back home to the most basic issues families face every day. She valued education policy because she knew the pro-family movement means nothing if young minds are indoctrinated to turn away from traditional American values and reject the principles a family is supposed to instill. From this closely held passion, Phyllis Schlafly pioneered a number of education-related endeavors, such as founding the monthly Education Reporter in 1986, writing her First Reader and Turbo Reader books, and leading the fight against Common Core. In May 1974, Phyllis was just beginning her fight for education.

Christie Loses 6-0 Despite Appointing the Judges

Banning the Word Easter

Alabama’s radio station WHNT reported that an elementary school principal allowed teachers and students to hold normal Easter celebrations, but banned the uses of the term “Easter.” The principal claimed her authority for this ridiculous rule was “religious diversity conflicts.” The school in Madison, Alabama, called Heritage Elementary, still had an egg hunt and a costumed rabbit, but Principal Lydia Davenport said neither could be referred to using the word “Easter.” She said it was ok to still feature a bunny, but she said, “we just make sure we don’t say ‘the Easter bunny’ so that we don’t infringe on the rights of others because people relate the Easter bunny to religion.” The principal allowed the egghunt to go on, but she ruled that the prizes had to be of different shapes rather than just eggs. No explanation was given about what restrictions were put on the egg hunt, but presumably it was the fear that somebody might slip up and call one of the eggs an “Easter egg.”

Anniversary of Our English Dictionary

Yesterday, On April 14 in 1828, 185 Years ago, Noah Webster published his Dictionary containing 30,000 definitions. He had been working on it for 26 years. As a business venture, the Dictionary was not a success. The rights to it were bought after his death by George and Charles Merriam. But as a landmark in giving American English its unique identity, and even the American concept of individual rights, Noah Webster’s life work was very successful.

Fifty Years of the Phyllis Schlafly Report: Liberal “Freedom of Choice” Doesn’t Protect Women From The Draft

With a name like “Equal Rights Amendment,” it’s not too hard to frame the debate to make conservatives look like the bad guys. The rallying cry of feminists was the same as it is today: “Freedom and choice!” They argued that ERA would open new doors for women by giving them more choices in their supposed new-found equality. However, looking below ERA’s surface revealed legislation much more focused on forced compliance than on “choice.” That was the theme of the March 1973 Phyllis Schlafly Report, which explored the question “Should Women Be Drafted?” Of course, this is still a matter of contention to this day, so it is just as important to arm ourselves with the facts to fight the forces of political correctness and social engineering.

Setting the Record Straight About Jefferson

Today is Thomas Jefferson’s birthday, a man whom we honor most of all because he wrote the Declaration of Independence. However, Thomas Jefferson has in recent years become the favorite Founding Father for the American Civil Liberties Union, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and other atheist groups because they like to quote him as the author of the phrase “wall of separation of church and state.” If there ever was an example of words being taken out of context, that is it. The atheists use that quote to misrepresent Thomas Jefferson and make us believe that he saw no role for religion in government; and that is completely untrue.

Convention of States Misleads Conservatives

The campaign for a new constitutional convention masquerades under the misleading slogan Convention of States. This falsely implies that states can exert some measure of control over the agenda, rules, or apportionment of a convention to amend the U.S. Constitution. In fact, all such powers are reserved to Congress or to the convention itself.

States Are Rejecting a ‘Horrible Idea’

Most state legislatures are now in regular session, and there’s no shortage of important work to be done at the state level. Yet many state legislatures are wasting precious time on a scheme to change the U.S. Constitution by calling for a national convention.

Making America ‘Safe – Not Sorry’

As we continue our celebration of fifty years of the Phyllis Schlafly Report, we turn our attention to Phyllis’s work from 1968. Phyllis Schlafly always showed the passion of personal experience as she wrote about issues that affected everyday Americans – including her! This is very evident in her Phyllis Schlafly Report from May 1968, in the headline article called “Crisis in Law and Order.” Without a doubt, her writings on the riots of 1968 very clearly apply to the protests that have swept our nation in recent years.

White House Cracks Down on Illegal Immigration

Fifty Years of the Phyllis Schlafly Report: Communists Still Use the “Trick Called Trade”

All conservatives agree that we need to “drain the swamp,” but it is much harder to agree on how to do that. Ultimately, draining the swamp means removing the corrupt influence of Washington bureaucrats from an otherwise superior system of constitutionally limited government based on personal rights and free enterprise. To most, trade policy might seem irrelevant to this goal. However, Phyllis Schlafly understood that politicians use trade policy as a way to broker their power and pick winners and losers in a blatantly uncapitalistic fashion. She saw the importance of the trade issue when she wrote her August 1972 Phyllis Schlafly Report entitled “Subsidizing the Soviets with a Trick Called Trade.”  In order to truly drain the swamp, we must seize this unconstitutional power wielded by Washington bureaucrats who offer financial and commercial aid to those acting in aggression to American interests.

New Deportation Policies Advance Trump’s Agenda

John F. Kelly, the new Secretary of Homeland Security, officially launched Donald Trump’s immigration agenda with a pair of memos in February. These documents demonstrated that the Trump Administration is absolutely serious in halting illegal immigration. Contrary to the liberal hysteria sparked by these memos, they outline in measured tone the sensible steps to be taken to deport illegal aliens who are dangerous to our citizenry. The era of “big immigration” is officially over.

Fifty Years – Reversing the Pattern of Surrender

This year is a time to celebrate! You may not know, but 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the Phyllis Schlafly Report. It continually amazes us how relevant Phyllis Schlafly’s information and arguments are for what we face today and we’re excited to share with you her time-tested strategies so we can sharpen our skills in the fight for conservative principles. First on our list is a look at her very first report titled “Giveaway of our Panama Canal.” Just as her revolutionary book A Choice, Not an Echo exposed the secrets of the Republican kingmakers, this iconic PS Report from August 1967 exposed the secret treaties that promised to undermine American sovereignty and deliver us another humiliating foreign policy defeat on the world stage.
